1964 Olympics & Paralympics Game were held at the time of the rise of Japanese economy after WW II. Some of the venues built for the games became representative works of Japan. One such works is Yoyogi Olympic Gymnasium designed by Kenzo Tange as the venue for the swimming games. Although the design/construction schedule was very tight to meet the Olympic games, the innovative and challenging structure replicating suspension bridge was built in only 19 months and completed only 39 days before the games. The facility will be the venue for the 2020 Olympics/Paralympics Games and is now under renovation works. As such, we will view the gymnasium from outside only.
Other venues are being updated/newly built for the 2020 games. We will walk around two construction sites; the New National Stadium designed by Kengo Kuma, et.al. now under construction and Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium designed by Fumihiko Maki completed in 1990 and now under renovation works.
Komazawa Olympic Park, a complex of gymnasiums and stadiums in the suburb was another venue for the 1964 games. Although it will not be used for 2020 games, it is now a ‘holy place’ for the sports enthusiasts. We will stroll in the park visiting legacy facilities that are modern with a taste of Japan. We will conclude the tour at the park.
